Dr. Shaheen Sardar Ali
Dr. Ali is the present Chairperson of Pakistan's National Commission on the Status of Women. She is also a Professor at the Faculty of Law in Pakistan's University of Peshawar. Before assuming this current post in the government, she served as Minister of Health, Population Welfare and Women's Development.

Dr. Ali is admired worldwide for her work in gender equality and human rights. In 1992, she was awarded Honorable mention in the UNESCO Prize for development of the teaching of Human Rights. She is the author of several books on the said topics. Her most recent work is "Gender and Human Rights in Islam and International Law. Equal before Allah, Unequal before Man?" Benazir Bhutto
On December 2, 1988 Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to head the government of an Islamic State. In the preceding decade of political struggle, Ms. Bhutto was arrested on numerous occasions; in all she spent nearly 6 years either in prison or under detention for her dedicated leadership of the then opposition Pakistan Peoples Party. Throughout the years in opposition, she pledged to transform Pakistani society by focusing attention on programs for health, social welfare and education for the underprivileged.

As Prime Minsiter, Benazir Bhutto has emphasized the need to heal past wounds and to put an end to the divisions in Pakistani society—including reducing discrimination between men and women. Ms. Bhutto has launched a nationwide program of health and education reform. She is now the current leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi in 1953.

Tehmina Daultana
Vice-President of the opposition party called Pakistan Muslim League. Ms. Daultana is also a former State Minister for Women Development, Social Welfare and Special Education under the ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. A staunch supporter of the deposed premier, she was arrested July 20, 2000 for protesting against the military government and was charged with sedition.

Syeda Abida Hussain
Syeda Abida Hussain has at various times been Pakistan's Minister for Education, Science & Technology (1996), Minister for Food and Agriculture (1997), the Minister for Population Welfare (Aug 99), the Minister for Environment and Urban Affairs (1999). In April 99 she resigned as minister following allegations of power theft.
