Laos
country progress report on reproductive health
The maternal mortality ratio
is 600-700/100,000 live births and the prenatal mortality rate is
90/1,000 live births. These high statistics are due to the fact that
most births are unattended. Reasons for this include difficulty accessing
health services from remote areas. Other factors contributing to the
poor quality of care include chronic lack of medicines, medical equipment
and laboratory facilities as well as lack of current clinical skills
on the part of health care providers. This lack of quality dissuades
women from seeking care at health facilities because the medical interventions
provided will not help them or their newborns. Many women also hold
a deep-seated belief that birth is a "normal and physiological"
event and thus requires no medical assistance. Read
