Marieta
Rigamoto
Marieta Rigamoto, a trained agriculturist, retired in 1998 afterworking
in government for 32 years to become a full time farmer, she did
not expect to be back so soon at her former workplace. Having won
the May 1999 elections as an independent candidate for the Rotuma
seat, she was approached to join the new government. She accepted
the offer, a Cabinet position as the Assistant Minister for Agriculture.
She was later given added responsibility as the Prime Minister's
special adviser on Rotuma giving her a chance to look at isssues
affecting the lives of the Rotumans.
In August 2001, she again ran and won. On 12 September 2001, Marieta
Makarite Rigamoto, the Member of Parliament for the Rotuma Communal
seat was sworn in as the Assistant Minister--Prime Minister's Office.

Ema Tagicakibau
Ms. Ema Tagicakibau had been elected Member of Parliament in 1999.
A fierce advocate of women's rights, Ms. Tagicakibau worked for
the Fiji Women's Rights Movement for quite a time before she ran
for Parliament.
She was appointed Assistant to the Prime Minister also
in 1999.
During the 2000 coup attemp,
Tagicakibau was held hostage by the rebels together with four other
women Members of the Parliament (MPs). Tagicakibau was freed to
attend a relative's funeral.
